Market Gunners - Gift Ideas During the depression, meat was scarce, and the market paid good money for ducks. Hunters along the east coast of the United States started using sink boxes to hunt ducks. This was as dangerous to the hunter as it was to the ducks. Many men drowned when the box flooded and sank, but ducks were still killed by the thousands, some to near extinction. This practice was outlawed, and through conservation efforts the duck population returned.
